He's Back : Allen Iverson Accepts Philadelphia 76ers Contract Offer

ESPN Reports:

Allen Iverson informed the Philadelphia 76ers Wednesday morning that he will accept their one-year, non-guaranteed offer.

The contract is for a pro-rated veteran's minimum of $1.3 million.

"In light of the recent injury to Lou Williams, which will sideline him for close to eight weeks, we felt that Allen was the best available free agent guard to help us at this time," team president Ed Stefanski said.

Team officials met face-to-face with Iverson and his representatives for nearly two hours Monday.

Iverson announced his retirement last week after an ill-fated stint with the Memphis Grizzlies. The 10-time All-Star was NBA MVP in 2001 when he led the Sixers to the NBA Finals.

Knicks Pass On Iverson

So the Knicks decided not to pursue Allen Iverson. Team president Donnie Walsh said despite its 2-9 record the organization will keep focus on the big name free agents after the season.

"I've always admired him, I think he'd be a great addition for a team that's in a different position than we're in and I hope he gets picked up. We feel like that (acquiring Iverson) could hurt our development in the future, so we want to go the way we're going..there will be other things we can do during the year that will be more in line with what our philosophy has been entering into this." - Knicks Team Preasident Donnie Walsh

Looks like the Knicks are saving every penny to make the offer to Bron Bron.

Why Retirement May Not Be Allen Iverson’s Answer

Allen Iverson, a four time scoring title holder as well as former MVP, is far from his the days of his prime, but Allen has millions reasons not to retire at this point in his career - 6 million according to some sources.  Iverson entered the NBA in 1996 with a footwear contract with Reebok initially for 10 years to the tune of $50M.  After snatching MVP honors in 2001, his contract with Reebok was renegotiated for a lifetime deal paying Iverson a rumored $6 million per year for the duration of his professional career.  Reebok has plans in the near future to re-release one of Iverson’s most sought after shoes, the Reebok Question which he wore en route to his Rookie of the Year honors.
